Long-range Ethernet for the Alpine 3800 Switch Series

The VDSL module for the Alpine 3800 switch series extends the range of traditional Ethernet on Category 5 cabling beyond to 4500 feet (as opposed to the typical 300 feet) over phone-grade cable (Category 1 2 and 3). By leveraging existing inbuilding wiring the VDSL module eliminates the need to rewire buildings with fiber or change the network architecture.

The VDSL module enables service providers to deploy differentiated broadband services throughout multi-tenant buildings quickly and cost-effectively with up to 10Mbps of bandwidth per tenant. This long-range Ethernet solution from Extreme eliminates the delay and high cost of rewiring which formerly would have to occur before services could be offered.

Extending Ethernet to the First Mile

The VDSL module has 8 ports providing long-range Ethernet at 10Mbps full-duplex on each port up to 4500 feet. Each VDSL port switches native Ethernet packets over regular phone wire terminating at a low-cost subscriber-line access port specifically at the Mogul 100 a plug-and-play configuration-free CPE device. Ethernet is preserved end-to-end retaining VLAN tags and Ethernet MAC information across the link. Together the 10/100BASE-TX 100BASE-FX and VSDL modules offer a flexible array of options for delivering Ethernet over phone-grade and data-grade wiring or fiber optic cable all in the same chassis.
