The Cisco 6160 witch is a 32-slot multi-port line-card architecture capable of supporting industry standard (asymmetric digital subscriber line [ADSL] and symmetric digital subscriber line [SDSL]) line technologies. The product is fully compliant to relevant network equipment building standard (NEBS) ANSI and ATM carrier-class network element standards. Network transmission connections include ATM DS3 OC3 single mode and OC3 multimode. Up to 256 ports per chassis can be provisioned with ADSL (discrete multi-tone [DMT]) and SDSL. A variety of configuration and cabling options are available to support a mix of ADSL and SDSL services within a common chassis. For above voice-band only applications the Cisco 6160 switch can be configured without a companion plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter chassis. Optional fan units are available for maximum heat dissipation in high-density central office configurations.

The Cisco 6160 switch provides an evolution path from todays unspecified bit rate (UBR)-oriented Internet access service model popular for most high-volume consumer DSL service rollouts to a comprehensive UBR constant bit rate (CBR) non-real-time variable bit rate (VBR-nrt) real-time variable bit rate (VBR-rt) and available bit rate (ABR) class of service (CoS) family required for the growing demands of telecommuter and business customers with mission-critical applications. In addition to supporting industry-leading traffic management through I.371-compliant policing extensive-output queue buffering and virtual path (VP)-granularity shaping the Cisco 6160 platform can provide the kind of robust ATM capabilities typically only found in edge-switch or higher-class products. Individual rate schedulers can support up to 3328 ports with a subtended configuration?allowing network providers to extract maximum value from each ATM-bearer service connection without creating the parking lot problem characteristic of first-generation DSLAM architectures.

The Cisco 6160 switch is deployed with NI-2 based common cards. Cisco DSL Manager manages NI-2 based systems. The network management system is a complete SNMP-based element management systems with fault configuration and performance reporting capabilities. A Cisco IOS ® command-line interface (CLI) is also available for craft interaction.
